The Gethmannsche garden is a public park in the district Blankenstein in Hattingen .

history

The garden was laid out in 1808 by the Kommerzienrat Carl Friedrich Gethmann (1777-1865) "for the pleasure and relaxation of his fellow citizens and all visitors to the town of Blankenstein" . The garden was one of the first public gardens in Germany that were freely accessible to every citizen. Its design corresponded to the new, contemporary ideal of the landscape garden .

On October 19, 1833, the Prussian Crown Prince, who later became King Friedrich Wilhelm IV , visited the garden. In an article in the Märkische Blätter from 1868 they wrote about the facility:

"So it remains undisputed that the Gethmann'sche garden, with its wonderful altitude and the effect-making, sensible and tastefully arranged flora, offers nature lovers something ideally paradisiacal, which would hardly be offered to them in second place in Westphalia and Rhineland."

Gustav Natorp praised the park in his book "Ruhr und Lenne" in 1880 :

“We recommend everyone, before leaving Blankenstein, to visit the Gethmann'chen gardens, both for their own sake, as they allow me to take a pleasant walk along their shady, often winding paths, as well as because of the wonderful view one can get from there which has dysentery roaring over a weir down below. It is one of the most beautiful scenic pictures one can imagine. "

The park is now a listed building, but is not well looked after. Former views of the Ruhr valley are now almost completely overgrown and only possible from the Belvédère . To the east you can look up to Lake Kemnader , to the north you have a beautiful view of the Stiepel district of Bochum . In winter, the slopes in the park are used for sledding.
