Old Town Hall

The old town hall is a half-timbered house in Hattingen . Since around 1420 the building was a market hall for the sale of meat, built from Ruhr sandstone . In 1576 the building was raised by two floors in half-timbered construction and used as a town hall.

During a renovation at the end of the 18th century, the building received large windows, the half-timbering was plastered, the roof with the pointed gables was replaced by a hipped roof and the hall was converted into a passage with prison cells. The passage connects the Untermarkt with the church square.

In 1910 the administration moved to the New Town Hall in Roonstrasse. From 1932 there was a local history museum in the house, today's Hattingen City Museum in Blankenstein .

In the post-war period, work began on restoring the framework to its original state. The core was renovated while preserving the beam construction. The restoration work was finished in 1993. Today it houses the gallery of the art association.
