Romania took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich with a delegation of 159 athletes. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was for the third time in a row the canoeist Aurel Vernescu . The most successful athlete was the canoeist Ivan Patzaichin , who won a gold and a silver medal.
