successes
Nicolae Rotaru took part in the Olympic Games five times with the small bore rifle , in which he always competed in prone positions and in three-position combat. He finished the games in Rome in 1960 in the prone position in 24th place and in the three-position battle in 25th place. Four years later in Tokyo he improved to fifth place in the prone position, while in the three-position battle with 20th place he missed a top position. In 1968 he finished the three-position competition in Mexico City in twelfth place. Like Ian Ballinger , he scored 597 points in the prone position, but was classified in fourth place outside of the medal ranks due to the weaker penultimate series of shots behind him. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he finally made it onto the podium while lying down. Although this time he was left behind against the tied Victor Auer due to the weaker last series of shots, but his number of points was enough to win the bronze medal. Gold went to Ri Ho-jun . He finished the three-position fight in eighth place. In 1976 he finished in Montreal in the prone position with 580 points only 68th place out of 78 starters. In the three-position fight he showed a better performance as 17th, but still remained far behind the medal ranks.
