Ian Ballinger participated in three Olympic Games . At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he scored 597 points with the small-bore rifle in the competition while prone at 50 m. Like Ballinger, the tied Nicolae Rotaru had scored 100 points in the last round, but only 99 points in the penultimate round, while Ballinger had also scored a straight 100. Ballinger thus received the bronze medal in third place. He was the first New Zealander to win an Olympic medal in shooting. In 1972 he did not get above 46th place in the same competition in Munich, in the 1976 Olympic Games he finished in 20th place. He was also a participant in the Commonwealth Games in 1974 and 1978 , but won no medal.

Both Ballinger's father and son were also active as marksmen. Ballinger himself initially traded in sporting goods before opening a store for firearms. After initially managing this with a partner, he paid it off in 1961 and remained the sole managing director until his retirement in 1981.
