Argentina Menis (born July 19, 1948 in Cernele , Dolj district ) is a former Romanian athlete who was one of the world's best discus throwers in the 1970s .

Internationally, she first appeared at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1971 , where she took fourth place with a width of 59.04 m. She celebrated the greatest success of her career a year later at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich by winning the silver medal. She fought a memorable duel with the then Soviet world record holder Faina Melnik . In the final, Menis set an interim Olympic record with a width of 64.28 m in her first attempt and was able to increase to 65.06 m in the fourth attempt. Melnik countered with a throw on 66.62 m and thus secured the gold medal.

The rivalry with Faina Melnik accompanied Menis throughout her career. Shortly after the Olympic Games, Menis succeeded on September 23, 1972 in Constanța , to improve the world record held by Melnik by 56 cm to 67.32 m. However, on May 25 of the following year, Melnik regained the record.

At the 1973 Universiade in Moscow , Menis won the silver medal. She also took second place at the European Championships in Rome in 1974 . Both times she was beaten by her all-time competitor Faina Melnik. Menis won another silver medal at the Universiade in Rome in 1975. This time, however, she was defeated by the Bulgarian Marija Wergowa , who at that time began her rise to the top of the world.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Menis only reached sixth place. She and Faina Melnik were then replaced by Evelin Jahl and Marija Wergowa-Petkowa as the dominant athletes in their discipline. The rivals met again at the Athletics World Cup in 1977 in Düsseldorf. As usual from the past, Melnik won over Menis. She herself commented jokingly that it must be because of her first name that she won second places so often.

Argentina Menis is 1.71 m tall and weighed 85 kg during her playing days.
