Evelin Jahl

Evelin Jahl , b. Schlaak, divorced Herberg (born March 28, 1956 in Annaberg-Buchholz ), is a former German athlete who - starting for the GDR - was twice Olympic champion in discus . In 1976 in Montreal she won the title under her maiden name Evelin Schlaak, in 1980 she successfully defended it in Moscow . Besides Sandra Perković, she is the only female discus thrower to have achieved two Olympic victories.

Life

The 1976 Olympic victory was the beginning of a steep ascent: in the Olympic competition, she surprisingly defeated the world record holder Faina Melnik from the USSR , who had been unbeaten for three years . In 1978 she brought the world record into her possession and became European champion, in 1980 she set another world record in the run-up to the Olympic Games.

After an injury, she retired from active sports in 1982.

Evelin Jahl started for ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and trained with Lothar Hillebrandt . She had a competition weight of 86 kg with a height of 1.83 m. After her athletic career, she was chairman of the legal commission in the GDR track and field association DVfL and member of the arbitration panel of the International Athletics Association IAAF until the end of the GDR . She later became a business advisor.

As IMS "Karin Reger", Jahl spied on fellow athletes on behalf of the Ministry for State Security .
