After the reorganization of the athletics section in the German Sports Committee (DS) and its dissolution, the German Association for Athletics (DVfL) was founded in Leipzig on May 17, 1958 . At the same time, the DVfL announced the all-German record lists that had been kept up until then and joined the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB).

At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, an all-German team competed. In 1964 the DVfL became an independent member of the IAAF . In 1988 the only international match between the FRG and the GDR took place in Düsseldorf . At the European Athletics Championships in Split in 1990 , two separate German teams competed for the last time.

On November 24, 1990 , the DVfL dissolved in Magdeburg . On the same day, the regional associations from the five new federal states were incorporated into the DLV at a DLV association day in Salzgitter .
