Ekaterini Vongoli

Ekaterini Vongoli ( Greek Αικατερίνη Βόγγολη , also Ekaterini Voggoli ; born October 30, 1970 in Larisa ) is a former Greek discus thrower .

She was Greek champion for the first time in 1989 and was able to repeat this success in 1990, 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004. Together with her long-time competitor Anastasia Kelesidou , she improved the Greek record from 57 meters to 67 meters. Since 2004, Vongoli has held the Greek record of 67.72 meters, surpassing Kelesidou's 1999 record by two centimeters.

After a 11th place finish at the European Junior Championships in 1988 and winning the Balkan Championships in 1994 Vongoli placed himself at the European Championships in 1998 in Budapest with 63.56 meters at No. 5. In the 1999 World Championships in Seville, she was with 61,00 meters Eleventh. She was only the third best Greek woman in the competition behind Kelesidou in second place and Styliani Tsikouna in 8th place. Also behind her two teammates, Vongoli was ninth with 61.57 meters at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, she did not reach the final as 14th of the qualification.

In Munich at the European Championships in Munich in 2002 three Greek women once again reached the final. Areti Abatzi was sixth, Kelesidou won bronze and Vongoli won the title with 64.31 meters. Vongoli won her second major medal at the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis. With 66.73 meters she won bronze behind Iryna Jatschanka (BLR) with 67.32 meters and Kelesidou with 67.14 meters. At the end of her career, Vongoli finished eighth at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with 62.37 meters.

With a height of 1.73 m, her competition weight was 89 kg.
