Ion Gabor

Ion Gabor (born October 19, 1943 in Galați ) is a former Romanian wrestler . It was 1972 vice European champion in Greco-Roman wrestling in the middleweight division.

Career

Ion Gabor started wrestling at Dunărea Galați Sports Club in 1957 . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. After the first major successes in the national field, he was delegated to the sports club Steaua Bucharest . In 1965 he was the first Romanian middleweight champion. He won this title four times in the following years.

He did not start at international championships until 1970. Until then, he had to let the experienced Ion Țăranu and Gheorghe Popovici go ahead at these championships . In 1970 he made his international debut at the European Championships in East Berlin . He came in the middleweight division only one victory and had to retire after defeats against Matti Laakso from Finland and Tomas Machaveriani from the Soviet Union after the 3rd round and ended up in 8th place.

Then he was used at the European Championships in 1972 in Katowice . There he won u. a. over the Germans Volker Zwick and Peter Nettekoven , fought against Miroslav Janota from Czechoslovakia and only lost to Anatoli Nasarenko from the Soviet Union. These results earned him the runner-up European title. In 1972 he also wrestled twice in international matches in the Federal Republic of Germany . He defeated Max Mitterbichler twice on points.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Ion Gabor won against Jimmy Martinetti from Switzerland and André Bouchoule from France , drew against Miroslav Janota and Harald Barlie from Norway and lost again to Anatoli Nasarenko. With that he finished 5th.

The last start at an international championship he completed in 1973 at the European championship in Helsinki . But he lost there against Momir Petkovic from Yugoslavia and Marcin Czardybon from Poland and retired early. That left him only in 15th place.

He completed a trainer training and was then for many years wrestling trainer at Steaua Bucharest .
