Constantin Gruiescu

Constantin Gruiescu (born June 24, 1945 in Godeanu, Mehedinți district ) is a former Romanian boxer . Gruiescu was bronze medalist at the European Championships in 1971 and the World Championships in 1974 , silver medalist at the European Championships in 1975 and European Champion in 1973 . He was also a participant in the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games .

Career

Gruiescu's first international championships were the Eastern Bloc Military Championships in Budapest in 1966 . He won the bronze medal in the flyweight (-51 kg) at this tournament. The following year he won the silver medal at the Balkan Championships in Istanbul . In 1969 he was able to win this championship in Galați for the first time. At the European Championships in 1971 Gruiescu reached the semi-finals, but lost it due to an injury to the Poland Leszek Błażyński . The following year he won the silver medal at the Balkan Championships in Ankara before starting at the Olympic Games in Munich . Here, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round against the later bronze medalist Douglas Rodríguez , Cuba (3-2). At the end of the same year he won the Eastern Bloc military championships.

Gruiescu celebrated his greatest success at the European Championships in 1973 . With a final victory over Vicente Rodriguez, Spain (5-0), he became European champion. In 1974 a bronze medal followed at the World Championships in Havana . In the semifinals Gruiescu lost to the Venezuelan Alfredo Pérez . He also won a medal the following year. At the European Championships in 1975 Gruiescu reached the final, which he lost to Wladislaw Sasypko , Soviet Union (3-2). In 1976 he took part in the Olympic Games for the second time , but already met the later Olympic champion Leo Randolph , USA , in the preliminary round , so that he was eliminated early this time (4: 1).

After these Olympic Games Gruiescu ended his career.
