Cristian Gațu (born August 20, 1945 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian handball player , coach, sports official, State Secretary for Youth and Sports, Brigadier General and President of the Romanian Handball Association.

Life

Gațu was the son of sports journalist Petre Gaţu. He first studied civil engineering in Bucharest and was interested in chess, football and handball. Gațu decided on handball and won ten national titles and the European Cup with Steaua Bucharest in 1977. Before that, he took third place with the national team at the handball world championship in Sweden in 1967 .

He won the world championship title in 1970 with the team at the handball world championship in France and in 1974 at the handball world championship in Berlin . Two years earlier he won a bronze medal with the team at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and a silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . In the early 1980s he moved to Italy and worked there as a trainer.

In 1983 he returned to Romania to work as a trainer and sports official. From 1984 to 1991 he was Vice President of Steaua Bucharest and from 1991 to 1993 State Secretary for Youth and Sport. He then headed military sports until 1997. From 1997 to 2014 he was President of the Romanian Handball Federation. At the same time he was President of Steaua Bucharest from 1997 to 1998 and Vice-President of the Romanian Olympic Committee from 1996 to 2002 . On September 14, 2007, he was promoted to brigadier general.
