Malawi took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich with a delegation of sixteen athletes (thirteen men and three women) in seventeen competitions in three sports. It was the country's first participation, no medals could be won. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Martin Matupi .
