Éva Tófalvi (born December 4, 1978 in Miercurea Ciuc , Harghita County ) is a former Romanian biathlete . She belongs to the Hungarian minority in Transylvania .
Career
Éva Tófalvi is a physical education teacher and lives in Miercurea Ciuc. She has been running biathlon since 1992 and has been a member of the Romanian national team since 1995. The ASA-M.CIUC athlete was trained by Simon Martin. In 1997 Tófalvi made her debut in an individual in Ruhpolding in the Biathlon World Cup and was 75th, but the highlight of the year were the Junior World Championships in Forni Avoltri , where she was sixth in the individual and fourth in the sprint. In the following season she also started sporadically in the World Cup, but apart from a 29th place in the singles in Östersund, she was not able to achieve any good results. Nevertheless, Tófalvi was allowed to compete at the highlight of this season, the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano . There she was able to achieve an outstanding placement for the first time as eleventh in the individual. She then achieved the same place at the Junior World Championships on this route in Jericho .
It was well into the second half of the 1998/99 season until Tófalvi was ninth in the top ten in a sprint in Valcartier in the World Cup . Your best season should be 2000/01. After several placements in the top 20 this season, she was able to achieve not only her best World Cup result but also her best World Cup result at the 2001 Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka with a sixth place in the individual. There was also a tenth place in the mass start. At the end of the season Tófalvi was 34th of the overall World Cup. After the unsuccessful Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 , she was able to record another respectable success in Turin four years later as 19th in the individual. Tófalvi was able to achieve good results in her career, especially in the individual, which speaks for her security as a shooter. Tófalvi has always competed at European Championships since 2000 except in 2005, but without ever achieving a significant result. At the open Balkan biathlon championships in 2008 , she was able to win the sprint title.
The 2008/09 season started very well for the athlete. In the sprint and the pursuit, Tófalvi was able to convince with ninth and seventh place. She achieved the best result of her career at the individual in Hochfilzen in December 2008, when she finished second thanks to a faultless shooting performance despite heavy snowfall. Since the first-placed Albina Achatowa was later convicted of doping, it subsequently became the Romania's first World Cup victory. In the further course of the season her progress, especially in shooting, became noticeable due to the training facilities provided. At the 2009 World Championships , Éva Tófalvi was able to achieve a top 10 result with 7th place in the individual. Together with the improved shooting performance, she also demonstrated stamina in terms of running: Tofalvi started in all individual races of the season and scored points at every start. At the end of the season she finished 11th in the overall World Cup. In the individual World Cup, she finished the season in second place. Éva Tófalvi took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best result was the 11th place in the individual. In 2002, 2010 and 2014, she was the flag bearer of the Romanian delegation at the Olympic Games.
Tófalvi also ran summer biathlon . In 2003 in Forni Avoltri and in 2004 in Osrblie she started at world championships. The best results were the pursuit races, where she was sixth in 2003 and seventh in 2004. With the relay she finished 10th.
In 2016, Tófalvi tested positive in a doping control . She decided not to open the B sample and announced that she had taken the drug Meldonium in December 2015 , which was only put on the prohibited list in 2016. The IBU therefore did not issue a ban. In Pyeongchang, Tófalvi took part in their sixth Olympic Games in 2018 . After that, she ended her career.
