Sonia Iovan (born September 29, 1935 in Cluj ) is a former Romanian gymnast .

In 1956 she took part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. With Elena Săcălici , Emilia Vătăşoiu , Georgeta Hurmuzachi , Elena Leuştean and Elena Mărgărit , she won bronze behind the Soviet Union and Hungary and thus the first gymnastics all- around team medal for Romania. In addition, the Romanians reached fifth place in the group gymnastics.

At the first European Gymnastics Championships , which were held in the Romanian capital Bucharest in 1957, Iovan won three medals, silver on the balance beam and bronze in the all-around and in the jump. At the World Gymnastics Championships in 1958 , Iovan won the bronze medal with the Romanian team behind the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. In 1959 Iovan was second on the balance beam and third in the all- around at the European Championships.

In 1960 Sonia Iovan took part in her second Olympic Games in Rome , where she won bronze with the Romanian team like four years earlier. She also reached four individual finals. In the all-around competition she was fifth, sixth on the floor, fifth in the horse jump and sixth again on the uneven bars.

At the European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig in 1961 , Iovan was tenth in the all-around competition. In 1962 she was ninth with the team in the 20th individual all- around at the World Championships. At their third and last Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, Iovan was sixth with the Romanian team. In the individual she could not reach any more finals.

At the age of 30 she ended her sports career in 1965 and became the mother of a son. She then worked at the Bucharest Business Academy until her retirement . After the death of her husband, she went to Lebanon in 1996, where she worked as a trainer. After twelve years, she settled in Brittany, France, and remarried.
