The Iran participated in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Australia Melbourne with a delegation of 17 male athletes in 17 sports competitions in three part.

It was Iran's fourth participation in the Summer Olympics .

The youngest athlete was weightlifter Henrik Tamraz at 21 years and 181 days , and the oldest athlete was weightlifter Mahmoud Namdjou (38 years and 63 days).

Flag bearer

Mahmoud Namdjou carried the flag of Iran during the opening ceremony.

Medals

With two won gold, two silver and a bronze medal, the Iranian team finished 14th in the medals table .
