Mahmoud Namdjou (born September 22, 1918 in Rasht ; † January 21, 1990 ; Persian محمود نامجو) is an Iranian weightlifter , bodybuilder and participant in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , 1952 in Helsinki and 1956 in Melbourne .

Life

Namdjou began lifting weights at the age of 20 and participated in Iran's national competitions from 1939. As a result of the war and the post-war period, he had to wait until he was 30 years old before he could take part in his first international championships, the 1948 Olympic Games in London, in 1948. There he took 5th place in the " Bantam weight (56 kg) ". In the world rankings for 1948 compiled by Oscar State , later Secretary General of the International Weightlifting Association, Namdjou was in first place with 310 kg in the Olympic three-way fight, ahead of the 1948 Olympic champion Joseph Di Pietro , United States , 307.5 kg and Asdarov, USSR , 305 kg. In his comment, State writes: “ Namdjou's performance of 310 kg places him at the top of the bantamweights for 1948. So far, however, we have only heard from himself that he is said to have achieved this performance. But I believe that he is actually capable of such an achievement. “How right Oscar State should be, became evident in the next few years, in which Namdjou, despite his advanced age, still achieved many successes, won two Olympic medals and became three times world champion.

In addition to weightlifting, Namdjou was also known as an artist and bodybuilder.
