Wat Sibounheuang is a monastery ( Wat ) of the early Buddhist Theravada tradition in Altlußheim near Heidelberg .

History and background

As early as the early 1990s, the Laotian community living in Germany wanted to found a wat in Germany. In May 1997 the Sibounheuang Theravada Buddhism e. V. Ajahn Outhai Dhammiko from Laos to found the Buddhist Wat Sibounheuang. Due to the growing interest in this center, a piece of land was bought in Altlußheim in 2003.

The foundation stone for Wat Sibounheuang was laid on this property on August 7, 2003 in the presence of nine Buddhist monks and around one hundred guests.

In the meantime, the Wat Sibounheuang Monastery sees itself as a place of friendly encounters between many different cultures. Abbot Ajahn Outhai Dhammiko sees its main tasks is to people with spiritual advice, instruction in Buddhist teaching and introductions to Vipassana - Meditation support. Buddhist festivals such as Makha Bucha , Visakha Bucha or Khao Phansa are celebrated in the monastery .

Wat Sibounheuang is the only Buddhist monastery in Germany that is run by Laotian immigrants and therefore the only one that represents Theravada Buddhism in its Laotian form.
