Bayram Şit (* 1930 in Acıpayam , Denizli , † 29. May 2019 ) was a Turkish wrestler in freestyle. He was an Olympic featherweight champion in 1952
Career
Bayram Şit started wrestling as a teenager in Denizli. He concentrated on the free style. At the age of 20 he had reached the top class of Turkish wrestlers in his weight class. His first start in an international championship he completed at the Mediterranean Games in 1951 in Alexandria, where he immediately won his first title.
In 1952 he qualified for participation in the Helsinki Olympics. In featherweight he came to victories over Roger Bielle , France, Ibragim Dadaschew, USSR, Henry Holmberg, Sweden, Rauno Mäkinen , Finland, Nasser Guivechi , Iran and Josiah Henson from the United States and thus won the gold medal.
In 1953 there were only Greco-Roman style world championships. Free Style World Championships were held in Tokyo in 1954. Bayram Şit was back in the featherweight division. In his first fight he met the Japanese local hero Shōzō Sasahara , against whom he lost. Then he secured the silver medal with victories over Nasser Guivechi, Géza Hoffmann, Hungary and Nikolai Musaschwili, USSR.
In 1955, Bayram Şit wrestled in an international match against Sweden in Stockholm in the lightweight against Olle Anderberg and lost just on points.
In 1956 he was also at the very busy World Cup in Istanbul. In featherweight he came there to victories over Enju Dimow , Bulgaria and Georges Ballery , France. Against Sinar Salimoulin, USSR and Shōzō Sasahara he lost and took 3rd place. With a start at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, he closed his successful career on. He missed a medal there with bad luck. In featherweight he won in Melbourne against Mohamed Nazvi, Pakistan and John Elliott from Australia and lost in his 3rd fight against Shōzō Sahsahara. Then he defeated Nasser Guivechi in the 4th round and still had to retire because he had scored 5 missing points. The Finn Erkki Penttilä had bye in the 4th round and thus reached the 5th round and therefore placed 3rd in the final before Bayram Şit.
After that, Bayram Sit resigned from active wrestling. He completed training as a coach and was the coach of the Turkish freestyle wrestling team for many years. In between he worked very successfully for two years as the coach of the French national freestyle wrestling team. He also published a textbook on wrestling.
