Charles E. Ackerly

Charles E. Ackerly (born January 3, 1898 in Cuba , Allegany County , † August 17, 1982 in Florida ) was an American wrestler and 1920 Olympic champion in free style featherweight.

Career

Charles Edwin Ackerly was from Kentucky . He began wrestling in high school and then attended Cornell University in Ithaca , New Jersey . There he was trained by Walter O'Connell.

In 1919 Charles won the Eastern Championships (championship of the states lying on the east coast of the USA ) in the featherweight division and qualified for the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp . In Antwerp, Charles won the four fights that he had to contest up to the Olympic victory. In the decisive battle, he was superior to his American friend from Penn University, Samuel Gerson .

Charles Edwin Ackerly did not take part in other international championships. The next opportunity would not have been until the Olympic Games in 1924, because at that time neither free-style world championships nor Pan-American Games were held.
