Ethiopia took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, with a delegation of twelve athletes in ten competitions in two sports.

It was Ethiopia's first participation in the Summer Olympic Games .

The youngest athlete was the track and field athlete Ajanew Bayene (20 years and 13 days), the oldest athlete was the cyclist Negousse Mengistou (24 years and 272 days).
