Thor Thorvaldsen, who sailed for Kongelig Norsk Seilforening , took part in the Olympic Games four times . When he made his Olympic debut in Berlin in 1936 , he started in the O-dinghy and finished the competition in 10th place. In 1948 he sailed in London in the kite boat class and was the skipper of the boat Pan , which he built himself and whose crew consisted of Sigve Lie and Håkon Barfod . With two wins in seven races, the Norwegians won the regatta with 4746 total points, just ahead of the Swedish boat led by Skipper Folke Bohlin and the Danish boat led by William Berntsen . Four years later Thorvaldsen succeeded with Lie and Barford in Helsinki the repetition of the Olympic victory when they again won the gold medal with the Pan . They won three of the seven races and finished the regatta with 6129 points in front of the Swedish boat led by Per Gedda and the German boat led by Theodor Thomsen . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Thorvaldsen, who was the flag bearer of the Norwegian delegation at the opening ceremony , did not get past seventh place this time with the Pan II . The crew in 1956 included Carl Otto Svæ and Bjørn Oscar Gulbrandsen . Thorvaldsen also won the Gold Cup in Arendal in 1948 and in Vejle in 1950 .

For his Olympic victory in 1948 Thorvaldsen received the Aftenposten gold medal .
