Burry Willie Stander (born September 16, 1987 in Port Shepstone , † January 3, 2013 in Shelly Beach ) was a South African mountain biker .

In 2007, Stander became African Cross Country Champion . In 2008 he became vice world champion in cross-country in the U23 category. In the same year he was also the South African champion in the elite class . His breakthrough came in 2009. He became U23 world champion , then he won the World Cup race in Champéry and was third in the overall World Cup standings. In 2010 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in both cross-country and marathon . In 2012 he won the World Cup race in Windham and finished second in the overall World Cup standings.

In addition, Stander took part in two Olympic Games. In 2008 he was 15th in Beijing and 5th in London in 2012. This made him the most successful African cyclist.

On January 3, 2013, Stander was killed in a training accident. He was hit by a shared taxi in his home country and succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident.

Stander had been married to racing cyclist Cherise Taylor since 2012 .
