Port Shepstone is located at the mouth of one of the largest rivers on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa , the Umzimkulu ("the great home of all rivers"). Port Shepstone, 120 kilometers south of Durban, is the administrative and economic center as well as that of the formation of the southern Natals. In 2011 the city had 35,633 inhabitants.
Various companies have settled here, including a sugar mill, a lime processing plant and a travertine quarry . In addition, timber is extracted in the district, acacia bark and subtropical fruits are harvested.
The city serves as a border in the SABC weather forecast and is mentioned with the phrase "... from Port Shepstone to the Tugelamouth " ("... from Port Shepstone to the Tugela mouth") .
In the township of Gamalakhe, the Abahlali baseMjondolo campaign is active - a movement from the slums of Durban . It was founded by Lungisani Jama.
history
Port Shepstone was founded in 1867 when travertine was found nearby. The city is named after Theophilus Shepstone , a member of the Natal government during the 1880s. On May 8, 1880, the first coastal ship landed in the port built by William Bazley. Two years later, in 1882, a group of 246 Norwegian immigrants settled nearby. They played a big role in the development of the surrounding area. After the train route to Durban was opened in 1901, the port was no longer needed, which also meant that the estuary silted up again and made it impossible to use it again as a port. However, the lighthouse is still at the mouth of the Umzimkulu with a luminosity of 27,000 candelas .
In 1883 the first school was founded in the city. Since it became too small in the 1950s, the school was divided into Port Shepstone Primary School and Port Shepstone High School .
traffic
The N2 national road runs through Port Shepstone . Furthermore, Port Shepstone has had a train station since 1917, which connects the city with Durban . Until 2008 there was also a narrow-gauge railway to Harding, the Alfred County Railway .
