1932 Summer Olympics / Participant (Argentina)

The Republic of Argentina participated in the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with at least 37 people . They represented the sports of running with cross-country skiing , hurdles and marathons , discus throwing , hammer throwing , swimming , fencing , boxing and shooting . The Argentine delegation also included a representative from the National Olympic Committee, a referee and two jury members. The coaches accompanying the athletes were not counted. In addition to the sporting comparisons, Argentine artists took part in the art competition that was held during the Olympic Games (July 30 to October 1, 1932) at the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art in the Olympic Park.

Track and field athletes
- The three Argentinians Samuel Augusto Giacosa , Carlos Bianchi Luti and Héctor Berra had registered for the 100 m sprint . But they remained without a win.
- The athletes Luti and Roberto Genta started for Argentina in the 200 m run . Luti ran 21.4 seconds , which was not enough for a good placement.
- Two other Argentine athletes ( Hermenegildo De Rosso and Luis Oliva ) struggled in vain for success in the distances of 800 m, 1500 m and in the hurdles .
- 10,000 m run : The two athletes José Ribas and Fernando Chacarelli took part in the finals , for which 13 athletes had qualified. Dominant in this run were the Pole Janusz Kusociński and the two Finns Volmari Iso-Hollo and Lauri Virtanen , who conquered places 1 to 3, while the world star Paavo Nurmi only remained spectators at these games due to a decision of the IOC . The two Argentinians were overtaken by the Poles and the Finns in the first round of the stadium.
- Marathon : 28 participants started the final competition here. For Argentina, José Ribas , Juan Carlos Zabala and Fernando Chacarelli were at the start in the stadium. During the run, Ribas gave up. Zabala, wearing a white Panama hat, was the first to stumble towards the finish line. He was very exhausted, took about half an hour to recover from the strain and had even lost more than seven kilograms of body weight. In the interview he later said: "I planned to win or to die."
- Berra also started in the long jump and decathlon disciplines .
- In the discus throw , Pedro Elsa qualified for the final.
- Hammer throw : Federico Kleger qualified in the preliminary round , while here the best, Ville Pörhölä from Finland, reached 52.27 m. The winner of the gold medal was Patrick O'Callaghan from Ireland with 53.93 m, who also took part in the high jump, 400 m run and boxing competitions.

- 200 m breaststroke (men): Justo Caraballo
- 100 m freestyle swimming - here Alfredo S. Rocca and Leopoldo Tahier qualified as participants.
- 4 × 200 m relay of men: these four swimmers represented Argentina: Alfredo S. Rocca, Leopoldo Tahier, Roberto Peper and Carlos Ramon Kennedy .
fencer
A total of 16 nations took part in these competitions.
- Men's foil fencing : The participating Argentines were Roberto Larraz , Angel Gorordo Palacios and Rodolphus Valenzuela . While Larraz was eliminated from Germany after the preliminary round in the fight against the later fifth-placed Erwin Casmir , Palacios came into the final.
- Epee fencing for men: Angel Gorordo Palacios, Roberto Larraz, Raul Saucedo and Rodolphus Valenzuela took part in the individual fight ; only Saucedo could qualify. He came into the two semifinals, which were contested by 20 participants.
- Saber fencing - the only Argentine participant was Carmelo Merlo .
boxer
An Argentine was registered in each weight class, a total of 8 boxers competed for medals.
- For the flyweight was Juan José Trillo qualified.
- In the bantamweight boxer stepped Carlos Alberto Pereyra in his country. He won his fight in the elimination round, but was defeated in the further course and had to retire.
- Carmelo A. Robledo was able to advance in boxing ( featherweight ) into the final round.
- As a boxing lightweight , E. Vargas took part in the eliminations, but was defeated.
- In the welterweight division , Luis Sardella went against Edward Flynn , who later became Olympic champion from the USA, and was eliminated in the preliminary round.
- The middleweight boxer Amado Azar fought his way through one elimination round and two preliminary rounds to the final. Another middleweight fighter was Julio Nilo Juaneda .
- As a light heavyweight , Rafael Lang boxed in the first round against Peter Jørgensen (1907-1992) (Jörgensen) from Denmark , who won the bronze medal at the end , Lang went empty-handed.
- In the heavyweight division , boxer Santiago Alberto Lovell stepped into the ring .
Protect
- These two Argentinians took part in the battle for medals in the rifle shooting discipline ( Miniature Rifle, Caliber 22 ): Antonio Daneri and Sigfrido Vogel .
According to the Official Olympic Report , 19 Argentine participants, including mostly runners and boxers, received medical treatment during the event.
Results of the participants
- The two participants in the 10,000 m run, Ribas and Fernando Chacarelli , finished 11th and 12th in the final.
- In the marathon, Juan Carlos Zabala was the surprising winner of the gold medal with a time of 2:31:36 hours, which was a new Olympic record.
- Elsa was last in the discus throw, i.e. twelfth in the final and reached only 34.36 m, while the winner ( John F. Anderson from the USA) had presented 49.49 m.
- Kleger finished the final in hammer throwing in 6th place with 48.33 m.
- Caraballo swam a good time in the second heat of the 200 m breaststroke competition (there were four heats in total) with 2: 55.2 minutes, but did not make it into the intermediate heat and thus also not into the final.
- The swimming relay reached sixth place out of seven teams, their time was 10: 13.1 minutes. The winners were the Japanese Miyazaki, Yusa, Toyoda and Yokojama.
- The foil fencer Palacios finished tenth in the final fight.
- The epee fencer Saucedo could not achieve a placement in the top ten.
- Carmelo Robledo won his boxing match against the German Josef Schleinkofer on points and received the gold medal for it .
- Juaneda finished in a good 6th place in his boxing match.
- Azar won the silver medal against Barth from the USA .
- Lovell fought against Luigi Rovati from Italy and won the gold medal .
- The two participants in the shooting competition finished in 16th place (Daneri) and 22nd place (Vogel).
The total balance of the Argentine Olympic team was:
3 gold medals, 1 silver medal and an 11th place in the nation ranking.
