Erwin Casmir

Bernhard Artur Erwin Casmir (born December 2, 1895 in Berlin-Spandau , † April 19, 1982 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German fencer who won Olympic medals with a foil and a saber .

Erwin Casmir's uncle Gustav Casmir was Olympic champion with the saber in 1906 . Erwin Casmir started fencing at the age of 13. For a while he moved from Berlin to Dresden to train with his uncle, but Gustav Casmir died in 1910. After the death of his uncle, Casmir returned to Berlin and learned from fencing master Ettore Schiavoni. In 1923 Casmir moved from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main to the fencing club Hermannia , later to SV Weißblau-Allianz München .

At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, three athletes had nine victories in the individual foil fencing competition: Lucien Gaudin from France, Giulio Gaudini from Italy and Erwin Casmir. In the jump-off Casmir won against Gaudini, but lost to the French. This gave Gaudin gold ahead of Casmir and Gaudini. The German foil team was eliminated in the preliminary round against France and Denmark. In saber fencing, Casmir reached the final round both in the individual standings and with the team: In the individual he came in sixth, the team took fourth place.

At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, no team took part of the German Federal fencers. Erwin Casmir competed as a single fencer and narrowly missed a medal twice with fifth place in foil fencing and fourth place in the saber competition.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Casmir took fourth place in the individual competition with the foil, but won the bronze medal with the team. In the competitions with the saber, Casmir only competed with the team, here he won his second bronze medal. With August Heim , Julius Eisenecker and Erwin Casmir, three fencers were involved in both bronze medals.

Erwin Casmir became German champion 52 times in his career , in addition to saber and foil he also won titles with the sword . From 1934 to 1936 Casmir was Reichsfachamtleiter fencing, from 1949 to 1957 he was president of the DFB . From 1934 to 1945 Casmir was a member of the German Olympic Committee , from 1949 until his death he was a member of the National Olympic Committee for Germany . In 2008 Erwin Casmir was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports . Professionally, Casmir was the general agent for a large insurance company. Erwin Casmir's son Norman took part in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.

On December 7, 1951, he was honored with the silver laurel leaf for his athletic achievements .
