Hall of Fame of German Sports

The Hall of Fame of German Sports is a virtual venue for honoring German athletes and sports personalities in the voluntary sector, patrons and other people who have become role models through their performance, fair play and cooperation. The hall can be viewed on the Internet. In addition, there is a “Gallery of the Hall of Fame of German Sports”, consisting of a number of individual portrait paintings by the Bensheim artist Hans Borchert, which is offered as a traveling exhibition.

According to the founder of the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation, the Hall of Fame of German Sports is a virtual site that it initiated “to remember people who have made history through their success in competitions or through their commitment to sport and society. This includes athletes and coaches as well as officials and designers ”.

In addition, there is a traveling exhibition that has been presented by Deutsche Sporthilfe at changing locations since May 2013 and which, in several modules, documents the successes and merits of the recorded personalities while at the same time showing historical connections and supporting the critical examination of the characters.

Since September 2015, the Hall of Fame of German Sports has been given a permanent place in the Glockenspitze Sports and Seminar Center in Altenkirchen (Westerwald). There it is accessible to the public free of charge. Deutsche Sporthilfe is working here with the Christian non-profit sports organization SRS.

History and profile

The idea for this hall of fame for German sports was first presented in 2006 on the occasion of the award of the Golden Sports Pyramid to Franz Beckenbauer. At this point in time eleven people were appointed, namely all previous winners of this award as well as posthumously Willi Daume and Josef Neckermann. By the end of 2007, a 25-person jury chaired by Federal Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble had selected a further 29 personalities. The foundation ceremony took place on May 6, 2008 in the presence of Federal President Horst Köhler in the German Historical Museum in Berlin . In 2011 the hall of fame was again greatly expanded by 21 people, and in 2012 by another five people. In addition, the bearer of the annual Golden Sports Pyramid of Deutsche Sporthilfe is accepted into the Hall of Fame. In 2013, four people were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 2014, Jochen Schümann was accepted as the winner of the Golden Sports Pyramid as well as four new members in the categories “Olympic and Paralympic Idea” and “Anniversary of the 1974 World Cup”. The Hall of Fame of German Sports thus comprised 80 members. On September 12, 2015, five more athletes were inducted into the Hall of Fame. On May 16, 2016, 16 more athletes were admitted to the Hall of Fame.

Magdalena Neuner and Michael Schumacher were elected to the Hall of Fame of German Sports in January 2017 and officially inducted in July 2017.

criticism

On the occasion of the founding ceremony, critics pointed out that only three women and one GDR athlete had been accepted. The jury replied that it was their job to elect members posthumously. So the great GDR athletes still alive were out of the question.

In addition, the membership of some athletes in the NSDAP is not mentioned in the official exhibition on the Internet. This is in contradiction to the admission criteria of “personalities of sport in the voluntary area, patrons and other persons who are considered role models due to their performance and attitude in sport”. The "Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe" took up the criticism and changed the criteria (see introduction). In addition, some CVs have been revised.

Criticism was also made of the English term “ Hall of Fame ” for a German institution.
