Jochen Schümann (born June 8, 1954 in Köpenick, East Berlin ) is a German sailing enthusiast .

Life

At the age of twelve he began his sailing career with a self-made optimist on Berlin's Müggelsee . He was a member of the Berlin-Grünau yacht club. He attended the EOS as well as the children's and youth sports school (KJS) and passed the Abitur. In 1972 he was the winner of the Spartakiad . In 1974 and 1975 he was the European junior champion. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal (Canada) he won the gold medal in the Finn dinghy . For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1988 in Busan (South Korea) and 1996 in Savannah , Georgia , he also won Olympic gold in Soling and the silver medal in Sydney 2000 (Australia). In 1996 Jochen Schümann was the first German to be voted World Sailor of the Year . He is the most successful German sailor of all time.

Schümann graduated in 1983 from the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) as a certified sports teacher. He then worked from 1983 to 1989 in the scientific center of the GDR Sailing Association. In 1991 he worked for the sailmaking company Paul Elvstrøm in Denmark, most recently as a manager. From 1993 to 1996 he was the sporting director of the Daimler-Benz project Aero Sail . In 1997 he was sports director of a company and advisor to the DSV president. In 1999 he was active spokesman for the sailors.

Jochen Schümann was the sports director of the Swiss team Alinghi , which won the America's Cup in Auckland (New Zealand) in 2003 and successfully defended the title in 2007 before Valencia (Spain). Since his contract with Team Alinghi was not extended, Schümann decided to support the United Internet Team Germany as team boss for the 33rd edition . After this dissolved in 2008, Schümann became the skipper of the ALL4ONE Challenge boat.

Jochen Schümann lives in Penzberg in Upper Bavaria . Schümann has a daughter and a son with his wife Cordula.

Awards (selection)

In the GDR he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in 1976 and in gold in 1988. In 2003 he was awarded the "Personal Prize of the Bavarian Prime Minister " as part of the Bavarian Sports Prize. Due to his sporting successes and his social commitment, Jochen Schümann was awarded the Golden Sports Pyramid in May 2014 , which is awarded by the German Sports Aid Foundation . He was also accepted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports . He also received the silver bay leaf .
