José María van der Ploeg García (born May 4, 1958 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish sailor .

José van der Ploeg took part in the Olympic Games three times . In his Olympic debut in 1992 in his native Barcelona, ​​he started in the Finn-Dinghy boat class and finished four of the first six races in the top three, which is why he was already the Olympic champion before the final seventh race . He won the competition ahead of Brian Ledbetter and Craig Monk . Four years later , he finished seventh in the Finn dinghy in Atlanta .
