José María van der Ploeg García (born May 4, 1958 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish sailor .

successes

José van der Ploeg took part in the Olympic Games three times . In his Olympic debut in 1992 in his native Barcelona, ​​he started in the Finn-Dinghy boat class and finished four of the first six races in the top three, which is why he was already the Olympic champion before the final seventh race . He won the competition ahead of Brian Ledbetter and Craig Monk . Four years later , he finished seventh in the Finn dinghy in Atlanta . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he started with Rafael Trujillo in the Star boat class and finished the regatta in eighth place. At world championships he won the bronze medal in the Finn dinghy in Pärnu in 1994 . He was European champion three times in the Finn dinghy.
