William Bruce "Bill" Bentsen (born February 18, 1930 in Chicago ) is a former American sailor .
successes
William Bentsen first took part in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the Flying Dutchman boat class . Together with Harry Melges , he secured third place behind the Olympic champions from New Zealand, Helmer Pedersen and Earle Wells , as well as the British Tony Morgan and Keith Musto . With a total of 5158 points, they received the bronze medal. Three years later, Bentsen and Melges won the gold medal in the Flying Dutchman at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg . At the 1972 Games in Munich , the sailing regattas of which were held in the Schilksee Olympic Center in Kiel , he was, alongside William Allen, a member of the crew of skipper Harry Melges ' US boat in the Soling class . They won three of the six races and finished the other two races included in the ranking in positions two and three, finishing the regatta with 8.7 points by a clear margin as Olympic champions. The second-placed Swedes around Stig Wennerström got 31.7 points.
Bentsen studied at the London School of Economics , Yale University and the University of Chicago , among others , and earned a Ph.D. in economics . For ten years he was a faculty member at Beloit College , where he taught as a professor, before becoming the full-time director of One Design Sailing at the US Yacht Racing Union . As such, in the 1970s and 1980s in particular, he played a key role in the regulations for sailing regattas that are still valid today. In 2017 he was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame .
