Rod Davis was in 1979 in Visby in the boat class Soling with Robbie Haines as skipper and Edward Trevelyan as a second crew member champion and a year secured thereon in Ponce with Haines and Trevelyan silver. He took part in four Olympic Games . For the United States he started at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 alongside Edward Trevelyan in Soling as a crew member under skipper Robbie Haines. They achieved two victories in seven races and they finished the regatta with 33.7 total points, with which they won the gold medal and became Olympic champion in front of the Brazilian boat of Torben Grael and the Canadian boat led by Hans Fogh . In 1992 he went to Barcelona in the Starboot as a skipper with Donald Cowie and won the silver medal with him. Davis sailed for New Zealand this time. With 58.4 points she finished the regatta behind the Americans Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel and in front of the Canadians Eric Jespersen and Ross MacDonald in second place. Four years later , Davis and Cowie sailed together again in Atlanta , but this time didn't get past fifth place, one point behind fourth. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Davis was the skipper in Soling, with Alan Smith and Donald Cowie as crew. After the preliminary round in the Fleet Race , they qualified as the second best team directly for the quarter-finals, which, like the group phase in between , was held in the Match Race . Although they won two out of five races like the Dutch and the Norwegians, they had lost in a direct duel against the two boats, which is why they were classified in fifth place behind them and thus eliminated.
Davis first took part in the America's Cup in 1987 . At the Louis Vuitton Cup 1992 he was defeated in the final with Team New Zealand to the Italian team. Numerous other participations in the America's Cup followed in various functions. In 2004 he acted as national coach for the Danish Olympic team. A year later he became Olympic Director at Yachting New Zealand .
