Bernd Jäkel
Bernd Jäkel (born May 1, 1954 in Berlin ) is a former German sailor who competed for the German Democratic Republic until 1990 .
Bernd Jäkel was second in the Spartakiade in 1970. In 1979 he won his first GDR championship title together with Wolf-Eberhard Richter and Thomas Flach in Soling . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Jäkel took part as a substitute. In the fourth race in the star boat , he was in Richter's boat for Olaf Engelhardt . The Solingboot with Richter, Flach and Jäkel from SC Berlin-Grünau won two further championship titles in 1982 and 1983.
In 1985 Thomas Flach and Bernd Jäkel switched to Jochen Schümann . With second place at the European Sailing Championships in 1985, the three sailors began a twelve-year streak of success. By the end of the GDR, the three won an Olympic gold medal in Seoul in 1988 , a bronze medal at the 1986 World Championships, two European championship titles in 1986 and 1988, as well as silver in 1985, 1987 and 1990 and bronze in 1989. There were also four DDR championship titles from 1987 to 1990.
In 1991 Schümann, Flach and Jäkel continued their careers for reunified Germany and won silver at the world championships and bronze at the European championships in their first year. In 1992 they won the World Championships and came fourth at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . In 1993 and 1994 the crew won the European Championships, in 1996 they received the bronze medal at the World Championships and won gold for the second time at the Olympic Games in Atlanta .
The 1.79 m tall Bernd Jäkel is a trained economist.
