Carlos Mauricio Espínola (born October 5, 1971 in Corrientes ), nicknamed Camau , is an Argentine windsurfer , sailor and later politician. With two bronze and two silver Olympic medals , Espinola was the first Argentine Olympian to win four medals.

Athletic career

Espínola first trained as a windsurfer at the Club Náutico de La Totora in his home province . His first major success was winning the silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana , Cuba . At the following Pan American Games in 1995 in Mar del Plata , Argentina, Espínola won the gold medal.

In 1996 Espínola was named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year ( Olimpia de Oro ). At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta ( USA ) he received the silver medal in windsurfing. He repeated this success at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . He also won the gold medal at the European windsurfing championship in Greece in 1998 .

After this success, Carlos Mauricio Espínola decided to change the sport. Instead of windsurfing, he started at the two following Olympic Games in the Tornado class , the fastest Olympic sailing class to date. In this discipline he won at the 2004 Games in Athens , held at the Olympic Sailing Center Agios Kosmas , and at the 2008 Games in Beijing , held at the International Sailing Center Qingdao , respectively the bronze medal for Argentina. His boat partner was Santiago Lange in both competitions .

Political career

After his sporting career, Espínola turned to politics. In 2009 he was elected mayor of the provincial capital Corrientes for the Jusitzialist Party . He held this office until 2013. From 2014 to 2015 he was Minister of Sport under the President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner . In 2015 he was elected as a member of the Senado , the Argentine upper house.
