At the XI. The 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin saw competitions in canoeing for the first time in Olympic history . A total of nine competitions for men took place on the Berlin-Grünau regatta course . One canoe per country was allowed per competition. The long-distance races did not take place on a circuit, but on a straight route, from Seddinsee to the grandstands of the Berlin-Grünau regatta course. At the venue of the canoe competitions, 40 German canoeists took part in capsizing exercises and 116 canoeists from 10 canoe uphill .

Since the Olympic village was too far away from the venue in Grünau, the canoeists (like the rowers too) were housed in Köpenick Castle , in the Police Officers School and Dorothee School in Köpenick, as well as in the boathouses.
