Karl Proisl

Karl Proisl (born July 9, 1911 in Traisen , Lower Austria , † December 2, 1949 in Belgrade ) was an Austrian canoeist who won two Olympic medals in 1936. From 1938 he started for Germany.

Life

Karl Proisl was a police officer and started for the Police Sports Association Vienna . In addition to canoeing, he was also active in Jiu Jitsu . At the canoe competitions as part of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, he competed in a two-man canoe with Rupert Weinstabl . Over 10,000 meters, the two took third place behind Václav Mottl and Zdeněk Škrland from Czechoslovakia and Frank Saker and Harvey Charters from Canada. The next day Vladimír Syrovátka and Jan Brzák-Felix from Czechoslovakia won over Proisl and Weinstabl, behind them Saker and Charters won bronze.

After the annexation of Austria , Proisl and Weinstabl started for Germany. At the 1938 World Championships in Vaxholm, the two fought over 10,000 meters silver behind Bohuslav Karlík and Jan Brzák-Felix. Over 1000 meters, Proisl and Weinstabl won ahead of the Czechoslovaks.

At German championships, Proisl won over 1000 meters in a single canoe from 1939 to 1941 , while Proisl and Weinstabl won over 10,000 meters in 1938, 1940 and 1941.

According to his home parish, Karl Proisl rose to the position of first lieutenant in the Second World War and "died in Yugoslav captivity" in 1949. According to Volker Kluge , as captain of the police force, he was sentenced to death by a special court for war crimes and executed.
