The competition consisted of one race in which only six athletes from six countries participated. Among them were the European champion from 1934 Erich Koschik and the Czechoslovak Bohuslav Karlík , who had won medals at the European championships in 1933 and 1934. However, the Canadian Francis Amyot secured the Olympic victory . He was only able to take part in the games by collecting donations, as the Canadian Olympic Committee and the National Canoeing Association had not provided any money for the trip. The duel for the silver medal was pretty close, but Karlík was able to prevail over Koschik.
