Ewald Tilker
Ewald Tilker (born November 3, 1911 in Herford ; † September 8, 1998 in San Francisco ) was a German canoeist who won an Olympic silver medal in 1936.
Tilker started for the Herford Canoe Club . In 1934 he won the German championship in single kayaks and, together with Fritz Bondroit, in two-person kayaks on the 1000-meter course. At the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1934, Tilker also won on both routes. In 1935 Tilker and Bondroit won again over 1000 meters, but lost to Willi Horn and Erich Hanisch in 1936 and only achieved second place. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Horn and Hanisch started over 10,000 meters, while Bondroit and Tilker competed over 1000 meters. In the final, the Austrians Adolf Kainz and Alfons Dorfner won ahead of the Swedish boat and the two Germans. However, the Swedish boat was disqualified because it hindered the Germans, so Bondroit and Tilker received the silver medal.
Ewald Tilker was a trained locksmith. After his sporting success, he received a scholarship from the city of Herford to finance his engineering studies.
