Adolf Kainz

Adolf "Adi" Kainz (born June 5, 1903 in Linz , † July 12, 1948 ) was an Austrian canoeist and Olympic champion .

Life

The trained goldsmith Kainz was one of 17 children of a gardener in Linz. After the dreamed up career as a motorcyclist nothing came of it, it wasn't until he was 26 that he sat in a kayak for the first time . He soon found a partner in Alfons Dorfner , with whom he started training.

With some successes in international regattas they secured the Olympic qualification. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , with a brilliant finish, they won the two-man kayak competition over 1000 m (with a record advantage of more than 5 seconds) on a Breinbauer kayak .

Kainz's career was suddenly interrupted by the Second World War. He later resumed training, but died surprisingly in 1948. Since 1997, a street name in Linz, the Kainzweg , has been a reminder of the Olympic champion .
