Alfons Dorfner

Alfons Dorfner (born January 27, 1911 in Lembach im Mühlkreis , Upper Austria ; † January 22, 1982 ) was an Austrian canoeist and Olympic champion .

Life

The baker Alfons Dorfner actually wanted to be a boxer. But when he met Adolf Kainz , he let himself be enthusiastic about kayaking and started this competitive training.

With some successes in international regattas they secured the Olympic qualification. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , with a brilliant finish, they succeeded in winning the two-man kayak competition over 1000 m (with a record lead of more than five seconds) on a Breinbauer kayak .

Dorfner's career was interrupted by the Second World War. Although he later resumed training, he was shot and seriously injured during a training trip on the Danube in 1948.

In his home community, a street name near his parents' house and the name of the "Alfons-Dorfner-Halle" are reminiscent of the Olympic champion . In addition, the gold medal and other prizes are on display in the Lembach Local History Museum.
