Fritz Bondroit

Fritz Bondroit (born March 26, 1912 in Herford , † September 19, 1974 ) was a German canoeist who won an Olympic silver medal in 1936.

Bondroit started for the Herford Canoe Club . In 1934 and 1935, he and Ewald Tilker won the German championship in two-person kayaks over 1000 meters. In 1936 the two took second place behind Willi Horn and Erich Hanisch . In 1934 Bondroit and Tilker had won the European championship on the 1000-meter course. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Bondroit and Tilker were defeated by the Austrians Adolf Kainz and Alfons Dorfner . The Germans had only crossed the finish line in third place, but the Swedish boat that had pushed into second place was disqualified because it had hindered the Germans.

Fritz Bondroit was a trained metalworker. After his sporting success, he received a scholarship from the city of Herford to finance his engineering studies.
