István Varga [ ʃtvaːn ˈvɒrɡɒ ] (born September 7, 1943 in Abony , † December 6, 2014 in Debrecen ) was a Hungarian handball player and coach. He played in the left backcourt and was known to convert free throws directly into the game.
Varga started playing handball in his hometown of Abony. After his military service he went to Honvéd Budapest in 1965 . With the army club he won the Hungarian championship and the cup four times . In the European Cup of National Champions 1965/66 he reached the final with Honvéd, but was defeated by the GDR representative SC DHfK Leipzig . He moved to Dózsa Debrecen in 1973 and was again champion (1975) and cup winner (1979). After stints at smaller clubs in Hungary, he was allowed to go to the West as a merited player to play handball with the approval of the Sports Minister.
In Germany, he was initially hired by two Hessian clubs from the league every year. After he went to TuS Spenge in 1984 , he was twice top scorer in the Regionalliga West . Then he took a seat in Spenge for a year in the coaching bench and in 1987 moved back to the field of the neighboring TV Lenzinghausen in the major league. In 1988 he ended his active career. He then coached a district league team from Halle (Westphalia) . In 1992 Varga went back to his homeland in Debrecen.
Varga was appointed to the Hungarian national team for the first time in 1966. He took part in two world championships and two Olympic games. After 127 games, 1978 was the end of the national team.
