Georgina Mary Mace (born July 12, 1953 in London ) is a British conservation biologist . She is Professor of Biodiversity and Ecosystems at University College London .

Life

Mace first studied zoology . In her doctoral thesis she dealt with the evolutionary ecology of small mammals; this was one of the first papers to use comparative methods to test ecological and evolutionary hypotheses. She was the founding director of the Center for Biodiversity and Environmental Research (CBER) at University College London from 2012 to 2018.

Act

Maces research deals with the measurement of trends and the effects of the loss of biodiversity (see biodiversity crisis ) and the change of ecosystems , in particular in connection with man-made climate change and other changes. In 2015, she was one of those scientists whose contribution on planetary boundaries in the journal Science attracted worldwide attention. She takes an active part in the debate about the climate crisis ; she said, "We don't have the right remedies for the weather extremes we are currently observing, and already many people are extremely vulnerable."
