Stephen Russell "Steve" Carpenter (* 1952) is an American ecologist . He made significant contributions to the understanding of the lake ecosystem .

Life

Carpenter earned a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1974 , a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976 and his doctorate there in 1979. From 1979 to 1989 he was an assistant professor and then an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame . In 1989 he moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has now retired .

Carpenter was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2001 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006. In 2007 he received the Naumann Thienemann Medal from the International Society of Limnology .

Act

Carpenter deals with limnology and focuses on the interaction between biogeochemistry and processes of food chains in water bodies. A particular focus of interest is the prediction of water characteristics based on land-water interactions and processes of food chains, including human impacts such as fishing and the introduction of exotic species. He also deals with the resilience of social-ecological systems . He has also contributed to research on our planetary boundaries .

In a study from 1987, Carpenter and his colleagues succeeded in demonstrating that primary productivity in water bodies is regulated by both trophic interactions and abiotic factors. This discovery was considered groundbreaking at the time, as it was previously assumed that the ecosystem of a body of water is primarily controlled by nutrients.
