Socio-ecological system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term socio-ecological system describes a coherent system consisting of biophysical and social factors that work together on the basis of regularities in a resilient and sustainable way. It is a special case of a complex adaptive system . The behavior of such systems differs from the behavior of socio-technical systems .

properties

A socio-ecological system has several spatial, temporal and organizational scales. These are usually hierarchically , more precisely even panarchically , linked to one another. It contains a number of critical resources (natural, socio-ecological and cultural), the flow and use of which is regulated by a combination of ecological and social systems.

Applications

There are many applications for socio-ecological systems. A well-known application is in particular research on resilience in ecology . More recently, this system view has also found its way into urban planning .
