Carl Folke

Carl Folke (born June 26, 1955 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ecologist and university professor. His work focuses on transdisciplinary research in the field of systems ecology , socio-ecological systems and resilience . He is the director of the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics , a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is listed by Thomson Reuters as a highly cited researcher in the categories Environment / Ecology and General Social Sciences . His H-Index was 124 in April 2018.

academic career

Folke studied a. a. Economics , Biology and Ecology and earned a Bachelor and Master of Business Administration . In 1990, after having worked in the private sector for a while, he received his PhD with a thesis on Evaluation of Ecosystem Life-Support: in relation to salmon and wetland exploitation at Stockholm University .

In 1991 he became deputy director of the Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics, part of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. After a postdoc at Boston University in 1991, he also became a lecturer at Stockholm University in 1994. In 1997 he was appointed professor there and received the chair for management of natural resources in the department of systems ecology. From 1999 to 2006 he was director of the Center for Transdisciplinary Environmental Research at Stockholm University . In 2007 he became Director of the Beijer Institute and Scientific Director of the Stockholm Resilience Center, a joint research facility run by Stockholm University and the Beijer Institute. For this he was released from the professorship. In 2017 Folke was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

Folke also works for various scientific journals . He is one of the two editors-in-chief of Ecology and Society and is present in the editorial offices of 14 other specialist journals.
