Highly Cited Researchers
Highly Cited Researchers (HCR, formerly ISI Highly Cited ) is a database from Clarivate Analytics (operated by Thomson Reuters until 2016 ), which lists around 6200 most cited and therefore most influential scientists from 22 scientific fields. The subject areas are represented in the database according to their share. The analyzed scientific literature comes from a period of 11 years, currently from 2008 to 2018 for the 2019 list; it is based on the Web of Science .
The data is based on preliminary work by the Institute for Scientific Information , which was taken over by Thomson Reuters in 1992 and Clarivate Analytics in 2016.
The scientific areas are divided as follows:
- Agricultural Sciences - agricultural science
- Biology and Biochemistry - Biology and Biochemistry
- Chemistry - chemistry

- Psychology / Psychiatry - Psychology / Psychiatry
- Social Sciences / General - General Social Sciences
- Space Sciences - space science
method
The method for producing the database begins with the extraction of data for the eleven years under consideration from the "Essential Science Indicators" database. The data are limited to journal articles and review articles .
The journals are clearly assigned to the above subject areas, which also defines the assignment of the articles that appear in them. Only for multidisciplinary journals such as Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Science, etc. a. the individual articles are assigned to the subject areas.
For the final list, the “Highly Cited Papers” are determined and sorted for each author. How many authors are included in the list depends on the size of the subject.
