Johan Rockström (born December 31, 1965 ) is a Swedish resilience researcher who is best known for his work on planetary boundaries . Clarivate Analytics counts him among the most cited researchers in the world.

Life

Johan Rockström studied from 1987 to 1991 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala (soil science and hydrology) and at the Paris Institute national agronomique (agriculture). He obtained his doctorate in 1997 at Stockholm University , where he had researched on "Systems Ecology and Natural Resource Management". In his previous scientific work, Rockström has dealt with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary topics on global water resources and land use management as well as socio-ecological resilience and global material cycles.

Rockström is particularly known for the development of the concept of Planetary Boundaries (load limits on the planet) published in 2009 .

Rockström is currently professor at Stockholm University with a focus on water resource management and global sustainability. He is also the Executive Director of the Stockholm Resilience Center at the university. From 2004 to 2012 he was Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute , temporarily a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research . Since 2007 he has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry , as well as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .

Rockström chairs the Arctic Council's Arctic Resilience Assessment and the Earth League, a network of leading scientists and research institutes from more than ten countries founded in February 2013 that deal with planetary processes and sustainability issues. In 2009 he was named "Swede of the Year".

Since September 2018, Rockström has headed the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) together with Ottmar Edenhofer . In 2020 Johan Rockström was accepted as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in the Geosciences Section .
