In systems theory, the term panarchy describes a structure that describes the relationship between socio-ecological systems .

A panarchy is on the one hand similar to a hierarchy , but dispenses with a rigid, top-down characteristic and instead contains the adaptability of adaptive cycles that are nested with one another over spatial and temporal scales.

Concept history

The term was introduced by Lance H. Gunderson and CS Holling . It refers to the Greek god Pan .
