The men 's regional handball league west was the second highest from 1969 to 1981 and the third highest division in German handball from 1981/82 until it was abolished in 2010 and one of five regional leagues that determined a promoted to the 2nd handball Bundesliga . Since the 2000/01 season it has consisted only of clubs from the North Rhine-Westphalian state associations Middle Rhine , Lower Rhine and Westphalia . Previously also clubs from the in were Rheinland-Pfalz settled Handball Rheinland represent the year 2000 in joined Southwest German Handball Federation . When it was introduced with the 1969/70 season to the 1999/00 season, the Regionalliga played in two seasons. The champion was determined in the final round. Then the league was single-track. Most recently 16 teams played in the league. After the end of the 2009/10 season, the Handball Regional League West was replaced with the other four seasons by a four-track 3rd division under the direction of the German Handball Federation (DHB).
