The handball community Römerwall Bad Hönningen / Rheinbrohl eV is a German sports club from the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Bad Hönningen . The club is known nationwide for the first men's handball team, which last played in the professional field in the 2003/2004 season , in the 2nd handball league .
history
The HSG Römerwall goes back to the Deutsche Jugendkraft Rheinbrohl (DJK), when the association was founded on January 26, 1932. In 1934, however, the existence of the young association was so jeopardized that the board of directors decided, in order to forestall those in power at the time, to dissolve the DJK again - with the thought of a future that is as hopeful as possible. This began 21 years later when the then chaplain Johanny called the DJK back into being in 1955. The newly founded DJK Rheinbrohl quickly developed into a stable handball department. In the 1958/1959 season the handball players took part in the championships with a senior team and an A youth team.
In 1956, within the DJK Bad Hönningen, a men's team also started playing, which joined the gymnastics club in 1960 until the BSC Bad Hönningen was founded as an independent handball club in 1968.
Rapid boom in the late 1960s
The handball clubs of the two places were in strong sporting competition and at times fought for points in the national league at the same time. Especially after handball took off rapidly with the construction of the Römerwallsporthalle in Rheinbrohl and a short time later with the construction of the multi-purpose hall in Bad Hönningen. At DJK Rheinbrohl, this upswing was underlined by the formation of a women's department in 1969.
The competition between the neighboring clubs finally culminated in the fact that the first two men's teams blocked each other's promotion to the league. But among those responsible, a common basis was quickly found and in 1975 a handball community called "HSG Römerwall" was formed, which began playing on March 1, 1975 with a total of 14 teams.
Immediately successful promotion to the league; 1981 even a one-year interlude in the regional league. In the following 14 years in the upper league, top places in the final table were always occupied.
The long-term promotion then succeeded in 1995. After the team managed to stay in the class in the 1995/96 season , they were able to qualify four times in a row for the promotion round to the second Bundesliga.
On May 12, 2001, the HSG Römerwall celebrated the West German championship , which also gave the club the right to promotion to the second division. Römerwall rose again after a season. The renewed promotion to the second Bundesliga in 2003 was followed by relegation to the Regionalliga Südwest.
In 2007 the club decided to restart, withdrew the regional league team and made the reserve playing in the association league the new 1st men's team.
